Everything You Need to Know About the New Star Wars and Marvel Announcements

Wow. Disney just held its annual investors meeting where they unveil their upcoming projects for the next few years. It's safe to say we won't have any shortage of content on Disney+ in the coming years. So if you aren't one of the 85+ million people with a Disney+ subscription I suggest you do so sooner rather than later. That being said, I'll break down the content in the order it was revealed so if you don't like Star Wars and just care about the future of the MCU, just skip ahead in the blog and read from there. Let's get started.

New Star Wars Reveals

Ahsoka is finally getting the show she deserves. After season 7 of The Clone Wars Animated Series, Ahsoka cemented herself as a staple character of the Star Wars story. She has crept her way into multiple Star Wars projects in animation and now in The Mandalorian in live action played by Rosario Dawson. Rosario will reprise her role for the show that is set in the same time frame as The Mandalorian. My guess is that means that Chapter 13 was a huge setup episode for this show rather than hinting at the future of The Mandalorian. I believe the show will follow Ahsoka as she uses her new found information on Grand Admiral Thrawn to find Ezra Bridger. This means that the show should pick up right at the end of the Rebels epilogue and follow Ahsoka and Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian warrior and previous owner of the Darksaber in their quest to find Ezra and finally defeat Thrawn. The title being specifically Ahsoka makes me think that Sabine will likely take a clear secondary role to the titular character which I think is a good move. Lots of potential for this show and with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni producing, it's bound to exceed expectations.

At first glance I thought this was going to be a show set in the era before the prequels, commonly referred to as the Old Republic. Once I realized that it clearly says and means the New Republic, I realized I'm an idiot and not nearly as excited as I should be. The Old Republic is wide open as far as canon goes and the possibilities are endless. However the New Republic is what was formed in the wake of the dismantling of the Galactic Empire and features who the fuck knows and who the fuck cares. I'm sure it'll still be a great show because of Favreau and Filoni but damn, they fumbled the bag on this one. The sequel trilogy is something we all want to forget (I'm looking at you J.J. you fucking asshole) so I really don't want to see any Star Wars content wasted on this era.

This announcement came with a teaser technically called a "sizzle reel" that I highly suggest you watch here. I never expected them to expand on the Rouge One story after the seemingly mixed reviews by fans but screw it I'm in. A 12 episode miniseries shot and produced with the same quality as the films is a turn on of a thought. I personally loved the Rouge One story and characters and look forward to how they expand Andor's story and show more of his time as a Rebel Spy. Lots of interesting material to work with and depending on the exact timing of the series, we could and very well should see some more Rebels tie ins. Expect Forrest Whittaker to be involved as Saw Guerra the unconventional Rebel and if we're lucky maybe a surprise cameo episode with Cameron Monagan reprising his video game role as young Jedi Cal Kestis. Lots of potential and a seemingly eager cast and crew make me very excited for what Andor can bring to the table.

This one we already knew was happening for awhile, but the new news here is development will start March 2021. So expect to see Ewan McGregor back as Kenobi as early as summer 2022. Oh yeah, and HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN IS BACK AS DARTH VADER. This is the content I've been waiting for since I left the theater as a kid after seeing Revenge of the Sith. The mini-series is set to take place 10 years after the events that transpired on Mustafar and should fill in some of the final gaps as to what our characters were up to in the time before the Battle of Yavin. I couldn't possibly be more excited to see Obi-Wan on screen again, in my opinion he's the best character is Star Wars and I can't wait to see how they approach what Bob Iger called, The Rematch of the Century. Chills.

If you watched season 7 of The Clone Wars Animated Series, you've seen The Bad Batch before. They were introduced in the first few episodes of the season and instantly stole the show. They're clones that "malfunctioned" according to what they should have been, but instead became more like human beings than we've ever seen out of clones. They each specialize in a particular military skillset, commando, sharpshooter, brute, strategy/technician. They wear awesome black and red painted clone armor and are a handful for any droids they come across. Now, the time period is the best part; the show takes place in the time IMMEDIATELY after Return of the Sith and will show Palpatine creating the Galactic Empire and how the galaxy responds. Their clone malfunctions I'm sure will keep them from executing Order 66 and they may be the only clones left fighting for the Republic. I'm betting on this show to fill in some crucial time in Star Wars lore and expand on the fear mongering atmosphere the Empire was able to create. The trailer they dropped along side this was incredible, you can check it out here.

Star Wars is finally dipping into the anime world, and they're doing it the right way. They chose to make this a 10-part anthology series of short films, each made my a different creator in the anime industry. As a huge fan of the OG Clone Wars Animated Series that took on an anime inspired animation style, I know that Star Wars and anime are a perfect mix. The stylistic approach that anime usually takes to their fights and even conversations will blend perfectly with the strong themes Star Wars hangs its hat on. I hope people who usually dismiss anime entirely give this series a chance because I think when it finishes it'll be one of the most unique and creative pieces of Star Wars content ever made.

Star Wars: The Acolyte will be a project like none before it. Iger describer the show as a Mystery/Thriller centered around a female lead in the final days of the High Republic. The High Republic was established about 800 years before A New Hope in the wake of the Old Republic and carried all the way to about 70 years before The Phantom Menace. Yet again, Disney is showing us a new time period yet to be seen in canon and I couldn't be more excited. Leslye Headlund is set to write and showrun the new series and coming off her recent success in the Emmy nominated Netflix show, Russian Doll, she has my confidence. Iger described her as a "boldly innovative filmmaker" and I can't wait to see what she brings to the table. Judging from the logo, I'm thinking our protagonist will be a force user, however for which side remains to be seen. Iger also mentioned the show would explore "emergent dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era". Fuck, that sounds cool. The timeline lines up with what I would think would be the time of Darth Plagueis and his apprentice the infamous, Sheev Palpatine. Since its all but confirmed that one of these men alter the midiclorians in Shmi Skywalker to give the Star Wars version of the immaculate conception of the Chosen One, I'm hoping the series will end answering the question of who "fathered" Anakin. It's also important to note that Yoda is alive and in the prime of his life at this point, so I'd be shocked if he didn't turn up in the series.

Disney is bringing back the biggest smuggling, smooth talking scoundrel in the galaxy, Lando Calrissian. In a series starring Donald Glover in the role, director Justin Simien is set to head the project. Not much information was released regarding this show other than it is currently in the early stages of development. I'm guessing we won't be seeing Lando back on screen for awhile. The casting of Donald Glover as opposed to Billy Dee Williams gives us a rough time period the show may take place in; I'm guessing sometime before we see him appear in Empire Strikes Back. There's a lot of missing time in Lando's story and I can't wait to see Donald Glover back in the Star Wars Universe.

Excitement Level: 8/10

The most important duo in Star Wars are back again, R2D2 and C-3PO are set to return in this animated adventure series. I think this will be the most childish of all the new content and I'm perfectly okay with that. Star Wars always geared towards the younger generation and now that we're getting so much mature content in the future, we have to accept there will be shows like these. Not much else was said about the series timeline wise and with R2 and C-3PO the entire Skywalker Saga is in play. Apparently there will be another protagonist fighting along side them who hopefully can carry the weight of the show. I'm optimistic at what Disney will come up with for our favorite droids in the galaxy. (Chopper please make a cameo.)

Excitement Level: 7.5/10

Star Wars movies are BACK. From the tearjerker of teaser trailer narrated by Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins which you can watch here, Rogue Squadron is finally going to be the military movie everyone in Star Wars has been begging for. Bringing some average joe's into the spotlight and showing how they banded together against an oppressive Empire is a far more powerful narrative than the force users dueling it out for the fate of the galaxy. Jenkins can bring a unique point of view to an already expansive universe. Rogue Squadron will most likely take place in or around the time of A New Hope and I couldn't be more excited. Patty Jenkins take the wheel, I'm along for the ride.

That wraps up the Star Wars news for the day, but don't leave the page yet: Marvel brought the big guns for their Marvel reveals as well.

MCU Announcements and Updates

They finally fucking did it. Ever since the Skrulls made their debut in Captain Marvel, the Secret Invasion storyline making its way to the MCU seemed inevitable. The story in the comics consists of our Marvel heroes discovering that many of the humans on Earth, even some heroes and villains, have been replaced by Skrulls impersonating them. As we saw in Spider-Man Far From Home's post credit scene, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and his compatriot Agent-turned-Director Hill have been replaced by Skrulls on Earth so they could work on the space station harboring and protecting the last of the Skrulls. Since the twist in Captain Marvel was the Skrulls being victims of the Kree, I'm curious if they introduce a different cell of Skrulls with a more evil agenda. Ben Mehndelson is also set to reprise his role as Skrull leader Talos and hopefully bring some clarity. This project has been a long time coming and if it is anything like the comic arc, we are in for a bumpy ride featuring some of our favorite heroes.

Excitement Level: 9/10

I'm only vaguely familiar with the Ironheart character since she made her comic debut in 2015 but from what I do know I can safely say this will NOT just be a woman Iron Man series. Dominique Thorne is set to star as Riri Williams, the young genius inventor who "makes the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. First of all, the Ant-Man and Wasp suits can shrink to the size of an atom, and the suits from Endgame could time travel so unless she becomes the most powerful hero in the MCU that statement is just way off. Regardless, Riri is an extremely interesting character with an energizing personality and I think is the perfect successor to Iron Man for armored heroes. She is also African-American and will help to further diversify the protagonists of the future MCU. If Marvel can tie in the Iron Man story in a clever way, I believe this show will exceed all fan expectations.

Excitement Level: 8/10

Don Cheadle returns as Rhodey/War Machine in the new series, Armor Wars. Not much else has been revealed about the show other than the premise; Rhodey will be fighting to prevent Tony's tech from falling into the wrong hands. If the show is interesting at all though, he will at least initially fail and we will get an escalated and hopefully better executed version of the Iron Man 2 plot. I don't love Don Cheadle as Rhody and don't feel overly confident with him having his own show but we'll have to wait and see. I would love if the Endgame duo of Rocket Raccoon and War Machine were reunited for this show to help carry some of the spotlight and bring in another big name with Bradley Cooper. I'm sure there will also be plenty of crossover with the Ironheart series as well.

Excitement Level: 7/10

Groot will be getting his very own series of animated specials that take place in the canon MCU. This show I expect to be very lighthearted and fun, gearing more towards younger audiences. Vin Diesel will return as Groot and bring the same life to everyone's favorite Guardian of the Galaxy.

Excitement Level: 7/10

The Guardians of the Galaxy are BACK! James Gunn is set to write and direct a holiday special seemingly poking fun at the infamous Star Wars holiday special. Seeing some of the best characters in the MCU return for a fun, holiday themed adventure is a match made in heaven. If there's anyone in the world that could turn this into one of the best things in the MCU it's James Gunn and I have full confidence he will blow us away. It is set to air holiday 2022 so we'll have to see what guardians are still around to partake after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, where they are expected to play a major role.

New trailer, new trailer, new trailer, watch it right now here. Fucking amazing. I'm not going to lie, when this first announced this show as one of the first MCU Disney limited series I was nervous. Nervous that Winter Soldier and Falcon on their own weren't interesting enough to hinge an entire show on. I'm gonna go ahead right now and say I was wrong. Marvel invested BIG TIME in making the effects of this show on par with their films and it'll pay off. The new masked villain teaming up with Barron Zemo looks dangerous and exciting and I can't wait to see how it plays out. This show will rely heavily on the very unique love/hate relationship between Falcon and Winter Soldier but I think they'll mesh just fine without Cap moderating. Good news is we only have to wait until this coming March 2021 to see how Marvel handles the legacy of Captain America. I'll most likely blog an in depth look and breakdown of the trailer in the near future so be on the lookout for that.

Excitement Level: 9/10

More WandaVision news was all but guaranteed to drop as the series is making its way to Disney+ very soon in January 2021. Not a ton of new information from yet another cryptic trailer (you can watch here) but I'm sure the implications of this show will be massive. It was cool to also see the comic vision costume make an appearance during the trick-or-treating sequence; I hope they include more fun nods to the comics in the series. Wanda/Scarlett Witch could very well be the catalyst for all the future multiverse events in the near future of the MCU and I expect this show to play a pivotal role in laying groundwork for both Doctor Strange 2 and Spider-Man 3. I also may do a breakdown blog for the new trailer of this show so stay tuned for that.

Excitement Level: 8/10

One of Marvel's most popular MCU characters got his revival trailer yesterday (watch that here). Tom Hiddleston as Loki Odinson is back in MCU after being saved from death is a separate reality thanks to the events of Endgame. The show is expected to run 6 episodes and brings in Rick and Morty's Michael Waldron to showrun. The trailer is jam packed with exciting action and plot as Loki is "rescued" by the Time Variance Authority. Owen Wilson will appear in the series as a TVA agent who name has not yet been revealed. The TVA are major players in the comics, working to keep the timeline from being altered, so I bet they'll have something to say about the actions of the Avengers and Thanos in Endgame. I think this will end up being the best of the Disney+ MCU shows we'll see in 2021.

Excitement Level: 9.5/10

She-Hulk has been officially cast as Tatiana Maslany, (tbh I have no idea who this is but good luck to her). Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth are both set to reprise their roles as Hulk and the Abomination respectively. I'm nervous about this show now. I was really hoping they'd introduce a new villain but seems like they're going back to Abomination. I do trust marvel at this point so I'll hold back my bad thoughts until we at least see a trailer.

Excitement Level: 6.5/10

Marvel's animated What If? series has been known for some time and I'm getting more excited the closer it draws. Releasing in Summer 2021, What If will be an anthology show exploring the multiverse of infinite possibilities in the Marvel Universe. They are essentially using the show to explore some popular non-Earth-616 comic arches and I'm all here for it. You can watch the new trailer here.

Excitement Level: 8.5/10

Marvel's First Family is making its way to the MCU. Its about damn time. The Fantasic Four are a foundation of the Marvel Universe, and without Captain America and Iron Man, they will be the center of the next 10 years of content. Jon Watts of Spider-Man Homecoming and Far from Home is set to direct and I'm sure he'll capture the energy perfectly. Spidey also ties in closely to the FF in the comics so I'm curious with Watts directing if Tom Holland will appear in the movie. I will definitely be blogging more news and theories about this movie in the coming weeks.

Excitement level: 10/10

Final Assorted News:

-Ant-Man 3 has been confirmed and titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

-The events of Spider-Man 3 will lead directly into Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (full blog coming soon)

-Christian Bale will be playing Gorr the God Butcher as the antagonist of Thor: Love and Thunder (again, full blog coming soon)

-Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau will both appear in Captain Marvel 2 (Girl Power!)

Verdict of the Presentation: Disney can have literally all my money (and they will.)
